New Funding: AIFIX Project—Revolutionizing AI for Global Healthcare

We are thrilled to announce that the BCN-AIM lab has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept grant to launch the AIFIX project, with €150,000 in funding.

The AIFIX project is dedicated to breaking down barriers in AI development for healthcare, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These regions often face challenges such as limited data availability, concerns about privacy, and the lack of data governance frameworks, hindering their ability to leverage AI for patient care.

To address these challenges, AIFIX will develop an adaptive federated intelligence platform that connects data nodes across both high- and low-resource settings in a privacy-preserving manner. Designed to work across diverse computational environments—from high-end servers to low-power edge devices—this platform ensures inclusivity and accessibility.

As a proof of concept, the platform will be tested through an obstetric imaging study, connecting six nodes in Spain, Denmark, Morocco, Kenya, Nepal, and the UAE. This initiative will focus on foetal development monitoring and the detection of prenatal health complications, demonstrating the platform’s potential to improve medical care globally.

AIFIX is a step toward enabling underserved regions to contribute to and benefit from AI-enhanced healthcare solutions, overcoming data barriers and computational limitations while safeguarding privacy.
