We are excited to announce that BCN-AIM is a partner in the newly funded Horizon Europe project, DVPS – Diversis Viis, Plurima Solvens. This ambitious initiative aims to reshape the way artificial intelligence models understand and interact with the world by developing a new generation of Multimodal Foundation Models (MMFMs).

A New Direction for AI

While today’s AI models are increasingly powerful, many still fall short when it comes to integrating and reasoning across different types of data—such as text, images, speech, and clinical information. DVPS addresses this gap by designing AI systems that can perceive, understand, and act based on multiple data modalities, making them more adaptable to complex, real-world environments.

Real-World Applications

DVPS will explore and demonstrate the potential of multimodal AI in three key domains:

• Healthcare (Cardiology): Supporting diagnosis, risk assessment, and clinical decisions by integrating data from diverse medical sources.

• Geo-Intelligence: Improving environmental monitoring, disaster management, and urban planning through the fusion of spatial and sensor data.

• Language and Communication: Enabling more natural, inclusive, and multilingual human-AI interaction by combining text, speech, gesture, and video.

Our Contribution at BCN-AIM/ Universitat de Barcelona

Universitat de Barcelona is one of the 20 partners. We, at BCN-AIM, will lead the development of a federated learning framework that enables training of multimodal models across decentralized data sources. This approach is critical for ensuring privacy, compliance, and collaboration between institutions—especially in sensitive fields like healthcare. Our work will help lay the groundwork for scalable, trustworthy, and secure AI systems.

A Strong European Consortium

DVPS is coordinated by Translated SRL (Italy) and brings together 20 partners from 9 European countries, including universities, research labs, hospitals, and industry experts. The project officially kicks off on 3–4 July 2025 in Rome.
